Loan repayments will resume on May 1st, but last October, the Biden Administration announced a limited opportunity for borrowers to gain qualifying payment credits towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). As such, many people who were not previously eligible for loan forgiveness became eligible. That opportunity will be closing in October of this year, however, and there is already a large backlog in terms of demand, such that anyone who wants to take advantage of this program will likely need to get the ball rolling by early May or thereabouts.

The House Officers Union is presenting an event on this topic next Monday featuring Michael Matheny of Stellar Financial Health. Mr. Matheny will be giving a presentation and Q&A session for our members on the process of pursuing retroactive loan forgiveness. He specializes in advising people on navigating student loan issues, and worked at OHSU for several years as a financial counselor, giving people advice about their student loans at the conclusion of their training.

Matheny’s presentation will help participants to think through questions like:

  • What do you wish you knew as loan payments get ready to restart?

  • What information would increase your confidence in managing a loan repayment obligation that is currently scheduled to resume in May of this year?

  • If you have been unsuccessful navigating the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program up to this point, what issues did you run into and what is preventing you from taking corrective action to capture this important opportunity of loan forgiveness

If you’d like to attend, please bring your own questions, or feel free to submit them in advance by responding to this email. Audience questions will be important in making this a helpful and productive conversation. If you are not able to attend, we will be recording the event for later distribution.
